FAQ

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is the treatment of a wide range of conditions and injuries to the body through the use of manual therapy, rehabilitation and  exercise. At The Abbey Physiotherapy and Spine Clinic, we not only strive to treat your existing injury or condition, but want to address the underlying cause in order to avoid on-going pain and help you become fitter and well-balanced in the process.

Do I need a GP referral to be treated?

It is always preferable to treat an injury as soon as possible so you can learn the best way to deal with the injury and resulting recovery.

We receive referrals from a wide range of health professionals. However, you can come directly to The Abbey Physiotherapy and Spine Clinic without a GP or consultant referral. You can feel safe in the knowledge that we maintain excellent communication and rapport with consultants, GPs and other health professionals throughout the country. This allows our treatment to be multi-disciplinary and often more effective when a comprehensive Injury assessment is made.

What can I expect to happen at my appointment?

Your first visit will consist of the physiotherapist asking some general questions and taking a detailed history to establish the cause of your problem, and if there are contributing factors from your history or lifestyle. A comprehensive physical examination will then be carried out to determine the most appropriate treatment and rehabilitation for you.

You can expect to go home informed about your condition, have a time frame for recovery, and have a short and long term exercise program to do at home, or in the gym, to complement your treatment at the clinic. There will be plenty of opportunity to discuss what is happening with your injury and to ask any questions. We are here to help you return to your full activities and achieve your goals.

Our patients receive a reminder text message 24 hours before their appointment.

What should I wear to my physiotherapy consultation?

This will depend on the type of treatment you are receiving; we recommend loose, comfortable clothing that will not restrict movement. A pair of shorts is recommended for lower limb treatments. For scoliosis patients, please wear undergarment that shows your spine. Please don’t wear a sports bra. Feel free to ring the clinic to confirm the required dress before your appointment.

How many sessions will I require?

Each condition presents in a unique way – it's personal to the individual. I will assess you and give you an idea of how many sessions you may need on your first visit, but there are a number of factors to take into account.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Please bring any referral letters and relevant test results such as x-rays, MRI scans etc. (If you have been referred)

How long will my appointment take?

45 minutes for an initial physiotherapy session. Follow on treatments are 40 minutes.

Scoliosis initial assessment is 90 minutes and follow up sessions are 45 minutes.

Pilates sessions are 60 minutes.

On qualification, they choose to specialise in specific areas of treatment and rehabilitation. Our physiotherapists have undertaken postgraduate qualifications in manipulative therapy, sports physiotherapy, scoliosis treatment, pilates and dry needling.

Does private health insurance cover my treatment?

You may get a rebate if you have physiotherapy cover or extras cover with your Health Insurance provider. This will depend on your policy, so please check with your provider. You may also be entitled to a tax-back rebate via Revenue's Form MED 1.
